This week, the Jews of Color Initiative published Beyond the Count: Perspectives and Lived Experiences of Jews of Color. You can read it at This link also is to the website of the Jews of Color Initiative, a national effort focused on building and advancing the professional, organizational and communal field for Jews of Color. The report contains many statistics, as well as the voices of Jews of Color, including this statement by African American and Black man in his 30s:
“I am often treated like a person just learning about Judaism instead of a Jew who is active in many communities. I went to Shabbat services recently, and a woman came up to me and said, without introducing herself, ‘Shabbat Shalom. So are you here for a religion class? Did you convert?’”
A CBI discussion of Beyond the Count is being planned. If you want to help, please contact Programming Committee co-chair Emily Weiner.
